Net Neutrality

There have been a few rumblings recently about net neutrality, in that the Telecomms companies world-wide are planning to allocate more bandwidth and speed to the highest bidder.

What this means is that the big companies will pay these fees and their sites will be served up very quickly, whilst the personal and small business sites will remain in the slow lane and will take ages to download to peoples computers.

Net Neutrality is the buzz-phrase for these nefarious actions by the telecomms companies, BT, Bell, AT&T and all the rest.

In my opinion, people PAY a lot of money to be able to access the net with broadband – it costs me a freaking bomb.So with that in mind – WHATEVER sites you want to access needs to be as fast as your equipment and line allows REGARDLESS of what the content is on that site.

Websites should not be prioritised for ANYONE and that means Amazon, Ebay and all the big players should not get priority over the lines just because they have a bigger budget and can back-hand the telecoms companies with huge amounts of money.

This completely screws the small retailers, as we have seen with the assault on our little shops by Tesco, as soon as this comes into play if say, a guy (or girl of course) wants to make a site to sell books on a small scale, his or her site should load as fast as any other would, otherwise he/she wont be able to compete fairly for the market which means that we would then find ourselves in a monopoly market that the biggest players can control (and push up) the prices for stuff.

You do realise though, that the decline of small independent retailers means we are FORCED to all use the same companies to get every single thing we buy. In other words in the event of a major catastrophe, there is no infrastructure (meaning small shops and stores) for people to get food and the likes of TESCO will basically charge us whatever they like AND in the event of a catastrophe the rich would pay it and the rest would starve.

See how the control is tightening over us in the real world as well and not just on the net?

…and don’t even get me started on the internet censorship and Net 2.0 side of things, I’ll save that for another day…
